Install and update Breachworks
Every step on Windows and on a Mac, including each place where the system asks you something.
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, a graphics card with Direct3D 11, about 400 MB of disk.
Breachworks-Setup.exe Breachworks-win64.zip
Install
- Download Breachworks-Setup.exe (about 40 MB, the whole game is inside it) from the release page. You need it only once: after that the game updates itself.
- Run it. The setup is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show Windows protected your PC (an unknown publisher). Press More info, then Run anyway.
- No administrator prompt. The setup installs for your user only, into
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Breachworks, and runs without administrator rights, so Windows does not ask for an administrator password. - Welcome. The window shows the version, the folder the game goes into (Change... picks another one), how much room it needs, and a tick for a desktop shortcut. Press Install. The setup refuses a folder that holds anything it did not install (a drive root, the Windows or Program Files folders, your profile, Desktop, Documents) and says so.
- Installing. The steps tick off one by one: closing a running game, copying the game, shortcuts, registering with Windows, and cleaning up an install of the earlier name if there is one. Cancel stops and puts everything back; if something fails, the setup shows what and leaves nothing half-installed.
- Done. Finish starts the game (untick Start Breachworks now if you do not want that). Later start Breachworks from the desktop or the Start menu. The main menu shows the version under the title.
The zip instead of the setup: Breachworks-win64.zip is the same game without the setup. Unpack it anywhere and run Breachworks.exe.
First start and the network
- The firewall prompt (LAN). The first time your PC hosts a LAN game, Windows may ask Allow Breachworks to communicate on these networks? The game is opening UDP port 7777 so the other machine can reach it: tick Private networks and press Allow access. Finding games in the list also uses UDP 7778.
- Set your network to Private on both machines: Settings → Network → your network → Private.
- Pressed Cancel? The other machine then only sees “could not reach the host”. Allow the game in Windows Security → Firewall → Allow an app.
- Online games need no firewall rule: both games connect out to a relay server (Unity Relay); nobody opens a port.
Where your data lives
Settings, packs (Mods), saved maps and captures live in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Breachworks\Breachworks. They survive updates and uninstalling. The install folder holds only the game's own files.
Updating
- The game updates itself. When it starts (and from Settings → Check for updates) it asks GitHub for the latest release. A newer version shows Update details in the main menu (News) and in Settings, which opens the update panel with Update now and Later.
- Update now downloads
Breachworks-Setup.exe, checks it against the release'sSHA256SUMS.txt(a file that does not match is deleted and never run), starts it and closes the game. - The setup opens as Updating Breachworks to <version> with four steps: waiting for the game to close, replacing the game files, cleaning up, starting Breachworks. It asks nothing and closes by itself. Settings, names and packs are kept.
- By hand: download the new
Breachworks-Setup.exefrom the release page and run it the same way; your settings live outside the game folder and stay.
Uninstalling
Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Breachworks → Uninstall. It removes what the setup placed, the shortcuts and the entry; your settings, packs and saved maps stay.
macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac (one app for both), about 250 MB of disk. Since 0.9.7.
Install
- Download Breachworks-macOS.dmg from the release page and double-click it. A Breachworks disk window opens with
Breachworks.app, anApplicationsshortcut, Zainstaluj Breachworks.command (the installer; zainstaluj is Polish for install),README.txtandCZYTAJ-MNIE.txt. - Run the installer. Right-click (or Control-click) Zainstaluj Breachworks.command → Open, then Open again in the warning. The app is not notarized by Apple, which is why macOS asks.
- macOS 15 and later: the warning may offer only Done and Move to Bin. Press Done, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message about the file, press Open Anyway, confirm with your password, then run the file again.
- Terminal opens and the installer works: it copies
Breachworks.appto/Applications(it asks before it replaces an older copy), clears the quarantine flag (xattr -cr), sets the executable bit, signs the app locally (ad hoccodesign) and starts the game. If it asks for a password, it is your Mac's login password; typing shows nothing. - Eject the Breachworks disk. Later start the game from Launchpad or the Applications folder.
Without the installer: drag Breachworks.app onto the Applications shortcut, then open it the first time with right-click → Open, or with System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway (macOS 15 and later).
First start and the network
- The Local Network prompt. The first time the game hosts or looks for games, macOS asks for access to the local network: allow it, or LAN games will not find each other. If you said no, turn it back on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network.
- The macOS firewall. If the firewall is on, let Breachworks accept incoming connections.
- Mac and Windows play together over LAN and online when everybody has the same version (0.9.7 or later).
Where your data lives
Settings and packs live in ~/Library/Application Support/Breachworks/Breachworks/, the log in ~/Library/Logs/Breachworks/Breachworks/Player.log (Finder → Go → Go to Folder…). The app holds no player data.
Updating
- The game tells you about a new version, but on a Mac it does not install it: Open the release page opens the new version's page in your browser.
- Download the new
Breachworks-macOS.dmgthere and run itsZainstaluj Breachworks.commandagain (answer yes when it asks to replace the old copy). It replaces the app and keeps your settings.
Uninstalling
Move /Applications/Breachworks.app to the Bin. Your settings stay in the folder above.
Everyone on the same version
Players of one game need the same version: a host turns away a player with another one and says why, and a LAN game of another version is listed with its version and cannot be joined. 0.9.7 changed the network protocol (net 15), so players of 0.9.6 or older must update first. Your version is under the title in the main menu.
A failed update check says why in Settings and never blocks the menu.
Problems and answers
“Windows protected your PC”
Expected: the setup is not code-signed (early access). Press More info → Run anyway. Download it only from the official release page and compare its SHA-256 with SHA256SUMS.txt if you want to be sure.
macOS offers only “Done” and “Move to Bin”
That is macOS 15 and later. Press Done, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, press Open Anyway by the message about the file, confirm with your password and run the file again.
The installer asks for a password
It is your Mac's login password. Terminal shows nothing while you type it.
macOS will not open a Breachworks.app I copied myself
Open it once with right-click → Open (or Open Anyway in Privacy & Security), or run Zainstaluj Breachworks.command from the disk image instead: it clears the quarantine flag and signs the app locally, the same as running xattr -cr /Applications/Breachworks.app and codesign --force --deep -s - /Applications/Breachworks.app in Terminal.
My friend cannot find or join my LAN game
Check: the same version on both; both networks Private on Windows; the host allowed the firewall prompt (UDP 7777 in, UDP 7778 for the list) and, on a Mac, the Local Network access; the address is right (ping <address>). Typing the host's address in Host IP needs only port 7777. An online game with a game code needs none of this.
“Could not reach the host”
Usually the host's firewall: allow Breachworks in Windows Security → Firewall → Allow an app (Private networks), or let it accept incoming connections in the macOS firewall.
My settings were reset
The game keeps a copy of a damaged settings file and starts from the defaults.
Something else does not work
Send the log (Windows: Player.log in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Breachworks\Breachworks; Mac: ~/Library/Logs/Breachworks/Breachworks/Player.log), a screenshot and a short note through the feedback page.
